The Living Room

14 Sep

Not surprisingly, the living room is one of the first rooms nearing completion in my home. I love designing living rooms! To me it is the room that really dictates the feel of the home and makes the biggest statement. While some may say the kitchen is the heart of the home, I say the living room is the main stage, setting the pace for the rest of the home to play off of. So here are some more pics of my living room in progression.

As you can see, if have already changed some things around. I replaced the cherry blossom sprays that were on top of the side tables with my lovely new lamps.

The new lamps are in beautiful polished nickel and clamp to the back of the side tables. They swing in or out and direct the light just where I need it. They also have two light settings for mood lighting or high reading light! I really love the masculine/industrial feel they add to the space.

As you can see above I also added some pretty “street scene” prints simply leaning against the arm of the lamps.

Here’s a look from the other side of the sofa.

Here are two wider angles to give some perspective of the entire room. I saved the chaise from our previous sectional sofa (it was the best part of the sofa!!) I plan on slipcovering it but am still deciding on fabric. Behind the chaise you can see my DIY art. It is simply an old frame I have had for years with some discount fabric I picked up stapled to the back. It took me awhile to find something to fill the “hole” behind the chaise but my patience paid off! I didn’t have to spend much money and got the big impact I wanted. Sometimes I just pays to wait. I am also on the hunt for a tufted ottoman for the center of the room. Again I am waiting for the right deal at the right time!

Here is my favorite part of the room, the white chairs in front of my huge window! The area of the living room really makes the space feel crisp and fresh while also being inviting! Haha, don’t you just love my shabby rug! Some people (like my husband, who is more of a clean and simple kinda guy but I love him for letting me have my way with the decor) don’t really “get it” but I do! I love the worn shabby look to death!! I have also temporarily thrown a salvage architectural find behind the chairs against the wall for now till I find it a home. I fell in love with this piece of old cornice from a porch and had to have it! I am thinking I will use it for a “crown canopy” above my bed soon but for now it rest happily in my living room adding character to the space!

Here is where my cherry blossom sprays landed. They flank the fireplace now. You thought I had gotten rid of them huh?!? Nope just a quick move to a new home freshened the space up! I am constantly tweaking and revising.

Here is my fireplace and “butterfly art” as you have seen before but now I have added the cherry blossom sprays and the vintage suit case table beside. I picked this old suitcase up at a local antique shop for $12. I simply put it on table I already had.

Now I know what you are wondering, “where is the TV?” Why it is where are the furniture is facing of course!

Do I want it to be the center of attention? Not really. Is it ok for now? Yeah because I get to watch Big Brother from the comfort of my chaise! Again I am waiting patiently for the right housing for this monster.

So to refresh, here is the living room before.

and after…

Before below, yuck! As you can see from the chandelier hanging, this room was meant to be a living room/dining room combo. What could have been a large room is cut into two too-small spaces that are not really functional. So I pulled up my handy-dandy Ikea planner and reconfigured the kitchen to fit a dining nook and turned a poorly designed floor plan into a beautiful space.

After…

Much more to come, so stay tuned to see kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom makeovers.

Until next time!

Paint Color?

2 Sep

I received a comment asking what color the walls in my office were so I thought I would throw in a quick post tonight with that info in case anyone else is looking for that too.

The color is Sherwin Williams Animated Coral

They call it coral but to me it is much softer and peachy than coral so I refer to it as Apricot. Color names are all relative to the viewer though and I could preach a sermon on that (but I won’t)!

This will be a nice way to remember what color this is for myself because I am sure that paint can will get chucked some day. So thanks for asking about the color so I can remember myself!

My Space!

1 Sep

I finally have pictures of my fresh new office. I designed the space for blogging and sewing/crafting. I wanted a space that was cheerful and inspirational and that really said KATIE! Well I think I nailed it. Here is the big reveal.

The room before was a plan blank canvas, white walls, beige carpet, etc… Your typical builder grade small bedroom. I don’t seem to have a before picture which saddens me but here is a picture I snapped with my phone right after painting.

Of course from this pictures lighting and without anything else in the room the walls felt a little bit neon. I knew that it would all come together in the end though.

I had a simple white desk from Ikea already so I added 2 Expedit bookcases to the mix.

One I put on its side on casters for a sewing table with storage. I can pull this out to the middle of the room when sewing so the fabric has somewhere to spread out. I picked up these fabulous new vintage “linen-look” file boxes from Ikea as well to store “do-dads” and stored all my fabric swatches, remnants, etc below.

Then there was artwork. I used remnants of Thibaut wallpaper inside Ikea frames. They were the perfect color combo of Apricot, Aqua, and Green all softened by the yellow background. I loved the Pagoda lanterns in this wallpaper which is why I picked it.

Then not to be left out, the other side of the room I framed some typography art and added some accessories to the top of the bookcase. I also picked up a fabulous pinboard framed in gray (seen below again) from Home Goods for just $24.

Then some finishing touches from things I already owned (always a good thing!).

First my favorite Thrift find chair.

My fav chair, shown here in true “Glamour Shot” style with a cute pillow made by yours truly, has bits of coral and aqua throughout this traditional needlepoint toile fabric. I heart this chair for real and it only cost $25!

Then finally one of my favorite lamps, one because it is fabulous and two because it was free, pulls the color scheme together.

I will be adding curtains soon in this Thibaut plaid.

I will show you the curtains when they are up. Until then I hope you liked my inspiration space and were inspired yourself.

Until next time!

I’m Back!

16 Aug

I’m back! It has been awhile since my last post because I have been working on my office space and waiting patiently for my computer to be function again. Finally I can share again and in the meantime I have been busy!

For my first post back I wanted to share with you something I have been dying to post about.

My butterfly art!

As you can see from this before picture (below) that I had a huge hole above my fireplace for what in the 90′s we called TV’s to what now we refer to as that huge box that I once stared at. The hole is not big enough for our new flat-screen TV’s so it is useless!

I hate those holes! So I decided to cover it up!

I took an old pallet and pulled all the boards off the back to fill the front.

Then I ordered some white cardstock butterflies from Etsy. (click here to shop) I used those little round dots you use for scrap-booking to stick the butterflies to the boards and ta duh!

My butterfly art. I thought carefully about how I wanted to place the butterflies and as you probably know, I am unashamedly coping the very popular wall art from Serena’s room (if you don’t know who Serena is you don’t know what I am coping anyway so it is ok :) ) but I like it so I don’t care! However I did want to give it my own twist so I had the butterflies flutter off to the picture adjacent.

I am planning on adding a white Gazelle trophy above the fruit picture (not a real one of course) to have a couple of butterflies land on the horn.

Like this:

Well that is it for today. I gotta get back to finishing my office makeover so I can blog about that. So until next time.

Red Letter Words

21 Jul

I am in love with these prints!

A perfectly distressed, vintage look with inspirational Scripture is much more appealing to me than random subway stops on canvas. I think I may have to get one of these for my home.

My Precious has Arrived!

8 Jun

Guess who showed up to surprise me last Friday, my Precious (a little “Lord of the Rings” throw back there). What I mean is my sofa is here! Finally after a month of waiting (which isn’t that bad for a custom-made sofa) my sofa finally arrived last week and I couldn’t be more pleased!

I ordered my sofa from a fabulous North Carolina furniture builder. I chose this sofa because it is extra deep (great for lounging in) but at the same time the two rows of pillows support your back if you want to sit up straight (for entertaining purposes because you can’t slouch in a LBD). I also loved the long bench cushion and elegantly rolled arms that are not too over-stuffed but not too modern.

I hand select the fabric, of which I chose two. The back, sides, and back pillows are in an intricate trellis pattern of dark taupe and cream. Complimenting the trellis pattern is a casual, yet sophisticated stripe in taupe and cream. I love how the trellis pattern is feminine and French, while the stripe has a masculine “menswear” appeal. The combination is stunning and inviting!

So here is a review of the progress so far: We went from this…

To this…

To this…

Not too shabby! Stay tuned for the budget breakdown and be amazed by just how little it took to create this look.

Progress #2, My Row House in the Southside!

1 Jun

I am happy to announce some big progress is being made and what I like to refer to as my “Row House in the Southside” is starting to feel like home. Here is my humble abode from the outside. Cute and fitting for Nate and I. We like it!

I recently paid a visit to a fabulous local “scratch and dent” store and landed some incredible deals including my new dining table and bistro chairs. Scored the table for $100 and the chairs for $25 each. I am in love with the grayed wood color of the table as well as the carved details! I am going to do a white wash on the bistro chairs to make them blend more with the table. It is starting to actually look like my kitchen now!

I also scored two of these solid wood Pembrooke tables for $75 each. The rustic wood and dark walnut finish matches the floors and adds a masculine touch to the space. I love that they look like antique tables, caster feet and all!

I have started carefully editing my decor selections for my Pembrooke tables and this is what I have come up with so far. A pretty tulip arrangement which I made myself with my favorite silver bowl purchased at an antique store along with a silver candle snuffer, a few decor books, some pretty aqua candles for color, and a picture of my sweetie and I make the first table very “me”. The second table has more of the aqua candles, a few books I picked up at the antique store (I ripped off the covers to give them a vintage look) and two Fleur De Lis bookends finish it off.

Then finally last but not least, I have a corner of my living room 99% finished! I love to sit on the other side of the living room and just look at this spot to imagine the whole place finished :) My two white linen chairs flank my Shaker style nesting tables (a handmade gift from my dad!). I bought a new burlap shade for a $5 goodwill lamp to give it a new life here in this space. An orchid in a mercury glass vase and a silver plated clock, a silver bowl, and two candles finish the table top. My favorite gray and white damask pillows pull in the wall color and “VOILA”, my pretty corner.

That’s all the progress I have to share for now. Until next time!

Some Great Advice for Design Bloggers

27 May

I stumbled upon this great design blog yesterday called “Nesting Place” and was very encouraged by a great post, “Process: Slow Decorating”. As I have said before, I have been taking my time and trying to enjoy the process of decorating my new home as well as letting the progression happen organically instead of trying to make everything perfect all at once. Yet, I have been reluctant to post anything from my house because nothing looks perfect yet, nothing is complete and not the way I plan to leave it. So I find myself wanting to put a disclaimer on everything to explain that I have bigger plans, that it will get better than this, etc. Are you resonating with any of this?? Read this post (click here) from “Nesting Place” and you too will be encouraged to share your progress and love your home even when it is not perfect.

Thanks “Nesting Place” for the encouragement and great insight. Keep up the good work and by the way I love your home!

My Shadow Box Project

27 May

I wanted to make a bigger impact with my vintage door plates and key instead of just hanging them on the wall from a hook like I did in my old place. I decided to try creating a shadow box with them. It turned out to be pretty fun. I picked out a craft paper from my local craft store as well as three shadow box frames and some brads to hold my door plates in place. I cut the paper to fit, punch the brad through the back of the paper and pinched it around the door plate like a hook to hold. I decided to sand the finish on the glossy black frames I purchased because they simply did not go with my shabby decor. It turned the frame to a charcoal like matte finish which I like. So here is my new shadow box art. A simple yet pleasing project.

Storage Please!

14 May

Well here we are. Tons of boxes hide my beautiful floors as I struggle to still see the potential beautiful space underneath all the mess. While there is lots of work to be done, I had to decide what was the first and most important thing to start. It is hard for me to resist diving into hanging art and putting out pretty things and to start with the proper organizing and storing of things. This time though I am forcing myself to do it right and I started with organizing.

I fell in love with Ikea’s new finish on their Ekby shelves. It is a high gloss white. It is so glossy it is covered with that protective blue film to protect the finish.

Then to add even more shine I bought these polished nickel finished brackets from Ikea as well.

I decided I would put these shelves in the bathroom for some much-needed storage.

Here is the bathroom before and after:

Not bad huh?!? I love making storage and function beautiful. Remember function doesn’t have to be boring. Find cute boxes, shelves, etc to store your items. You will create a beautiful space you will want to keep clean and pretty.

Ok so here is what the shelves really look like when all my stuff is out.

Still not so bad though huh?!?

Another unique and creative organization idea I came up with was inspired by a salvage yard purchase of this “cool old gate”. The ticket even said “cool old gate”! I agreed.

I got the gate for 40% off! What a deal!

Here is the first use of it. As a jewelry holder in my bathroom.

It does a fantastic job as my jewelry organizer. This will probably be the first new life of many for this “cool old gate.” I am sure I will being moving this thing around the house to use for the next inspired space but for now I was in need of storage and organization which it is both! I love it.

So there you go. My first 2 projects of many. Can’t wait to show you the rest!

Until then, Katrina
