Thinking outside the “Light” Box

28 Feb

I think one of the things that defines this generation’s design style is “thinking outside the box”. We don’t play by the rules and are not satisfied with the idea that a wallpaper or light fixture or wall color is “bedroomy” or “kitchen or bath”. We use what we want where we want it. We make closets into offices ( a trend I have seen many times in the past few years in the blogosphere). We use bedrooms as closets (such a great idea if you have a spare). One thing I really love is using lighting in unusual, creative ways. Above, the designer used 2 rows of pendants instead of the usual one to create depth and interest in the space.

This industrial inspired light hangs sparingly around the kitchen. No flush-mounts and “kitchy” chandelier over the table.

Sconces on the side of the bathroom mirror instead of a bath-strip over the mirror is actually the most faltering way to light your face. You’ll look ten years younger and have fabulous style to boot.

Swing arm wall lamps are not new, but using them as a picture light instead, GENIUS.

Instead of hanging a chandelier front and center in this room, this home owner used 2 lanterns above the seating areas instead. This is a great way to spread more light around the room instead of concentrating all the light in one place.

Turn a bath-strip sideways and you have a long and lean sconce to put on either side of the mirror for great lighting and an interesting look.

We’ve all seen arc lamps over chairs or cascading over the lovely sectional sofa, but here they stretch over the bed as a modern reading light. Love it!

Innovatively Adorable Kitchen Gear

25 Feb

Why just make a slot in a spoon when you can make a floral arrangement?

Why just a round coaster instead of a moisture resistant rubber flower?

Why struggle with keeping your tea tag out of your drink, when you can drink out of an adorable zipper mug that holds the tag out for you. I love innovative minds who think of practical, yet adorable ideas to help us in our daily lives while making life beautiful!

A Noteworthy Makeover!

18 Feb

I have found a noteworthy makeover I had to share with you, from Willow Decor. I love the color scheme, the mixing of textures, and the flow between designated areas.

My favorite part of this entire room is the bench above. The burlap feedsack slipcover is divine! The key to the look above are the proportions of the chairs to the table. They are a perfect fit.

I love the mixture of the shiny metal on the pendants with the wooden stools and matte textures in the fabric on the chairs. This is a perfect way to mix texture.

I love the relaxing nature of this room. The architectural piece on the wall is an excellent substitute for something typical, while also creating depth and texture in the room. The only thing lacking is a larger rug, but I understand a work in progress.

I hope you liked the makeover and will go check out Willow Decor now for more great inspiration. It is one of my favorite blogs, for good reason!

New Classic American Homes

15 Feb

Classic design had all but been abandoned by my generation, and shamefully so, until recently. Some of us are starting to come around. With economic times as they are, classics have made a come back. Trends are out, and classics are in. The idea of saving money and designing around strong classics with staying power are what many people are adopting, instead of purchasing and repurchasing trendy, not so worth the money items. I love this idea! I have always had somewhat of an appreciation for classics and have always had a strong belief in appreciating all styles of design. These pictures of new, beautiful classic homes from Albert, Righter, and Tittmann are perfect examples of new classic American homes with quality, style, and sustainability. So I call all my fellow 20′ somes to join in and buy quality classics meant to last instead of cheap substitutes for immediate gratification.

Winter Boot Transition

13 Feb

I love my winter boots, comfort and style combined. As spring slowly creeps closer and closer, it has been a concern of mine that I will soon have to pack them away till next winter. Until now, that is. Via Delight by Design, I have found my inspiration to prolong the life of my winter boots well into spring. I am so excited! I can love my boots a little longer and this makes me happy!

The Canopy Bed for Timeless Tuesday

2 Feb

via StyleHive

Whether new and unique, or classically styled the canopy bed will always be around. The canopy bed is a classic that has lasted centuries. It has been used in royal homes, draped with heavy curtains for warmth and in tropical bungalows to keep out insects. A practical classic has maybe lost some of its practicality due to modern conveniences but it hasn’t left our homes, which leads me to believe that the canopy bed is worth mentioning for Timeless Tuesday. See Paula Grace Designs for more designers ideas of great classics to stick around.
